This photograph shows an unknown naval deck officer. The photograph itself is interestingly mounted in a ship's porthole.

The naval officer wears a dark blue peaked naval cap with an imperial crown and scroll in yellow (or white) metallic thread above an imperial crown (see right). This insignia identifies him as a Deck (or junior) officer. He wears a double breasted officers jacket (or possibly a greatcoat) also in dark blue (see Naval Officer's Uniforms). His shoulder strap insignia identifies his exact rank although this cannot be clearly seen from this photograph. Under his jacket he wears a white shirt and collar with a thin black tie.

Please contact me here if you have other photographs of the German colonies or the soldiers and sailors that served there. I am especially keen to hear from people with family photograph collections and am always happy to try to assist in identifying uniforms, units, places and dates for family history research.
